Weekly Training Expectations
Puppy training at Top Gun starts in the first days of life and grows step by step. Each week builds on what came before, with a focus on socialization, desensitization, house manners, confidence, and learning how to live with a family.
Every puppy develops at their own pace, so this is a guide to the experiences and foundations we work toward, not a promise that every puppy will master every skill on a particular day. Training continues after your puppy joins your family, and we’ll help you keep that progress going.
Weeks 1–2: Early handling and first experiences
From just a few days old, puppies receive gentle, carefully supervised handling. We introduce Early Neurological Stimulation and Early Scent Introduction during the appropriate early window. These brief experiences begin building familiarity with touch, scent, and gentle changes in position.
Weeks 5–6: Confidence and early learning
Puppies begin exploring more of their surroundings and interacting with people in different ways. We introduce early learning through play, begin building name recognition and recall, and continue handling and sensory experiences. Puppies also learn from time spent with their mother and littermates.
Weeks 9–10: House manners and foundations
Puppies continue learning potty and crate routines, along with early obedience and leash foundations. We practice calm handling, appropriate play, and beginning manners such as waiting briefly and responding to their name. For outings, puppies can take in the sights and sounds from a wagon while we follow our veterinary vaccine protocol.
Weeks 13–14: Manners in more situations
Training adds more practice with calm greetings, leash skills, waiting, and settling around distractions. Puppies continue meeting people and encountering new sights, sounds, and environments in ways that follow our safety protocol. Public outings before vaccine clearance are done from a wagon; therapy training with other people and environments begins when puppies are fully vaccinated.
Week 17 and beyond: Preparing for the transition home
For puppies staying in our extended program, we continue strengthening obedience, leash skills, settling, and daily routines. We also practice the kinds of transitions that help a puppy adjust to a new home, while continuing socialization and confidence-building. The goal is to give each family a thoughtful foundation to build on, not to suggest that a young puppy is finished learning.
Weeks 3–4: Exploring the world around them
As the puppies become more active, we continue gentle handling and begin introducing new textures, sounds, objects, and parts of the home. These early experiences are kept positive and low-pressure. Puppies start learning that new things can be explored safely.
Weeks 7–8: Routines begin
We build on early socialization with new people, sounds, surfaces, and everyday activities. Puppies begin practicing simple routines for potty training, crate familiarity, gentle handling, and settling. Veterinary care and veterinarian-administered vaccinations are part of their ongoing care.
Weeks 11–12: Building consistency
We continue working on potty habits, crate comfort, leash skills, and simple cues. Puppies practice settling after play, accepting grooming and body handling, and responding around everyday distractions. We keep introducing new experiences thoughtfully, allowing each puppy time to observe, recover, and engage.
Weeks 15–16: More reliable skills
We build on the foundations with more structured obedience, stronger leash manners, and practice responding when there is more happening around the puppy. Potty training, crate routines, house manners, and calm behavior remain part of everyday training. Once a puppy has completed the required vaccinations and is cleared for public ground exposure, training can include more direct work in public settings.
Training continues at home
Every family receives our five-week at-home training plan, access to our YouTube training series, potty-training resources, and lifetime breeder and trainer support. Confidence, independence, gentle behavior, and good house manners grow through consistent practice with the family. We’ll be here to help you keep building those skills after your puppy comes home.
